Almost every organisation collects, processes, and/or uses personal data for business operations. This concerns client data as well as data about business partners and staff. In this case, the organisation is subject to the data protection legislation of it’s respective country of residence (e.g. in Germany, the Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz, BDSG) and other applicable data protection laws).

Within the European Union, the data protection legislation of the member states is derived from the European Union Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data (or the European Data Protection Directive, as it is often refered to), ensuring a similar level of data protection in the individual member states.
